When the sun’s rays struck a shaving mirror in Christchurch last month the mirror acted as a burning glass and ignited a blind. This was one of the most unusual causes of a fire listed in the report of the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) to the Christchurch Fire Board last evening. But Mr Osmond recalled a stranger case. About 25 years ago, when he was with the Dunedin Fire Brigade, there were three calls to fires in one house, each call being on the same day every year. It was found that there was a bubble in one pane of glass and that at the same time each year it concentrated the sun’s rays sufficiently to cause a fire.
