Women And Night Work
Sir,—-Recently, a local coffee bar proprietor was convicted for employing a woman in the early hours of the morning. Post Office and Internal Affairs Department women cleaners commence work every morning at 3 a.m. I suppose we may expect a prosecution here, also?—Yours, etc., ONE LAW. November 28, 1958. [The Assistant Superintendent of the Labour Department (Mr A. J. Peterson) said that the hours in which females could be employed in restaurants were limited by the Shops and Offices Act, 1955, and also by clause 20 of the tearooms and restaurant workers’ award. However there was neither a statute nor an award which limited the hours of the staff of the Internal Affairs Department.]
