Reporter From Melbourne (N.Z. Press Association—Copyrtgnti MELBOURNE, December 1. A “Melbourne Herald” reporter sent to Auckland to examine the New Zealand Totaliser Agency Board betting system wrote today: “It beats our illegal off-course bookmakers by a length of the Flemington straight.” The reporter, Darrell Symmom, gives a detailed description of the system and says: “I respectfully commend it to all those now fearful it would lead to excesses or encourage gambling.” He suggested that Mr F. R. B. Martin, Victoria’s Royal Commissioner on off-course betting, should go to New Zealand to study the system. The T.A.B. has-been praised by Victoria’s racing clubs in evidence at the betting inquiry. Betting at the T.A.B. was all “pleasant orderly and legal,’’ said Symmons. The totalisator premises were like banks.
