“Same Type Of Engine” (Rec. 11 p.m.l i CINCINNATI, (Ohio), Nov. 30. A research official at the General Electric Company's Evendale plant in Cincinnati, confirmed today that work was under way on nuclear-powered bomber engines. Mr D. R. Shoults. an aviation engineer, said the magazine “Aviation Week,” which reported that a Soviet atom-powered plane was being test-flown, was correct in its reference to work at the Evendale plant on the project He said the device being developed used what engineers called a direct air cycle nuclear power plant. Mr Shoults said the direct air engine, the same as that used by the Soviet aircraft, and one of the simplest of atom power devices, had been proved workable. tin this ■ system, air Is heated directly in the atom reactor, to eliminate heat loss.] “Aviation Week” said work had continued on the project at Evendale and at Arco.
