TRANSFER OF SALAN
Army Post In France (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 1. General Raoul Salan, who has held full civil and military powers in Algeria since the May 13 revolt, will shortly be transferred to become Inspector-General of the Army, according to the Paris correspondent of “The Times.’’ He will be replaced by Mr Paul Delouvrier, a 44-year-old Gaullist economist. General Salan was to have been transferred immediately after the referendum on the new constitution, according to semi-official reports, but General de Gaulle is believed to have changed his mind because of the military situation and possibly under pressure from Algiers, “The Times’* correspondent said. Since then, officials claimed, the Prime Minister had not been entirely satisfied with the way in which General Salan and other senior officers had carried out his instructions not to meddle in politics and to allow genuine and free competition in the Algerian elections. General Salan’s new post is a promotion but will in practice afford him much less responsibility. His successor, Mr Delouvrier, is Director of Finances at the European Coal and Steel Authority. He is expected to accompany General de Gaulle on his Algerian visit this week.
