AGED PEOPLE IN LOWER HUTT
Opening Of Social Welfare Building
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 26. An old people’s social welfare building, built at a cost of more than £37,000, was opened at Lower Hutt today by the Prime Minister (Mr Nash). The ceremony marked the culmination of 13 years of planning for a centre in the Hutt Valley where, in the words of the Mayor of Lower Hutt. Mr R. Dowse, “old people can stroll in and rest in peace and quietness.”
. Both Mr Nash and Mr Dowse paid tribute to the work of the late Mrs B. A. Logie, a former Lower Hutt city councillor, to whom they said the credit for obtaining the building was due During the ceremony a framed photograph of Mrs Logie laying the foundation stone last December was unveiled by Mr Nash and Mr James Logie, a son. Mr Nash also congratulated Mr Dowse on his drive and enthusiasm in bringing the centre into being. The building was financed by a £28,000 loan and by contributions of £3757 from the Hutt Valley Old Folks’ Association, £3500 from the Government and £2OOO from the City Council. The council also contributed much of the cost of the site
The building, which will be controlled by a management committee, contains a shop on the ground floor and offices on the upper floor and will be selfsustaining. It will be open from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. five days a week. Furniture given by Hutt Valley firms and individuals includes a writing desk and two chairs presented by Mie Hutt Rotary Club.
