Saving On Nylons
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, November 24. Women in Britain, according to official figures, buy on an average 11 pairs of nylon stockings a year, says the “Daily Express.” Research carried out by a leading chain store which sells 21 million pairs of nylons a year showed, however, that once a girl got a job or a boy friend she began buying nylons at the rate of one pair of 15 denier sheers a week. Hundreds of thousands of women bought nylons this way. The average price was 5s 6d and the stockings were thrown away after the first run appeared, says the newspaper. Only one in every four customers, however, bought more than one pair of nylons at a time. A year’s supply of once-weekly at the best selling price of 5s 6d a pair would cost £l4 6s but if women bought in bulk, choosing identical shade and style so they could pair up unladdered stockings efficiently, the yearly outlay would be cut to £3 17s, even if the nylons were still used up at the rate of one pair weekly, it says.
