VACANT POSTS OVERSEAS
National Caucus Critical
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 26.
The Government's tardiness in filling important diplomatic posts in London and Washington, particularly the vacant appointment of High Commissioner in London, was condemned in a resolution passed by a National Party caucus today, according to a statement issued by the the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake).
“It appeared to the caucus that no Labour member of Parliament could be persuaded to accept the post, since to do so would jeopardise his political future." Mr Holyoake said.
“Apart from that aspect, the result of any by-election could be so unfavourable to the Government that another General Election could not be postponed until the end of the Government's term of office in 19G0.”
Mr Holyoake said it was an affront to Britain to leave the position of High Commissioner vacant for so long and obviously Now Zealand had already lost prestige. ‘‘When questioned in the House last session about filling the vacancies, Mr Nash said the Government ‘would appoint a man when it finds him.’ but it is taking a long time to find him," said Mr Holyoake. "Government Official” “The simple fact is that the Government is afraid of public opinion." said Mr Holyoake. “It has lost caste even with its own former supporters, and knows that even in its strongest scats it cannot face a by-election with confidence.
“The Cabinet Ministers and senior parliamentarians, from whom an appointment would normally be made, are well aware that a by-election could result in the loss of a Government seat.
"Another General Election would then be necessary. Knowing the present mood of the country, the Government is justifiably fearful of the outcome and so seeks to avoid it. Hence, the prospect of a job in either London or Washington docs not appeal.
“Instead of facing the realities of the situation, Mr Nash is content to allow our prestige overseas to suffer. The situation reflects little credit on him or his party," said Mr Holyoake.
