Lock Takes Six For 29
\(KZ Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, November 25. The Australian XI was beaten by 345 runs by the M.C.C. at the Sydney Cricket Ground today. Spinning off a rough patch caused by bowlers’ footmarks, the lefthander G. A. R. Lock took six for 29 as the Australian j XI lost nine wickets for 48 in 1 103 minutes. Only a fine 38 by R. N. Harvey gave the innings any semblance of respectability. Lock finished with six for 29 off 16 overs. He turned the ball as much as two feet off the rough patch. The delivery which dismissed Harvey pitched outside the off stump and took the left hander’s leg stump. Lock has now taken 25 wickets in 180 overs on the tour to be the leading wicket-taker in Australia at present. Australia’s prospects in the coming tests have declined sharply. There is no doubt that Lock will get similar conditions to aid him late in six-day test matches. Controversy Expected i It appears certain that the follow- | through of the fast bowlers will ; be one of the major controversies of the test series. The worst offenders are the fast bowlers,! Trueman and the Australian A.i R. Davidson, who both run close :o the stumps, then run down the] pitch after delivering the ball. The M.C.C. selectors sprang ai : surprise when they chose W. Wat-' H son to field today in place of P. J. Loader.' who has an injured] i ankle. Watson has recovered from] his knee operation and will almost certainly play in Brisbane on Friday. Play resumed in overcast conditions, with the Australian XI facing 330 minutes’ batting to avoid defeat on a pitch all in favour of the spinners, Lock and Laker. The left-handed Harvey suffered most. There was a rough patch a foot in diameter cut up by the fast bowlers’ follow through on a good length just outside Harvey’s off stump. Trueman gained the wicket he had deserved yesterday when! Stevens played forward to the] fifth ball of his first over and was, completely beaten. The Australian XI was 57 for, one. Trueman had two men in a leg! trap to N. O'Neill, but it was. Lock who caused the young star] to fail again. After making two. O’Neill drove! his second ball of Lock’s third' over—but to general amazement, Trueman, at silly mid-on, shot out] his left hand and brought off an| excellent catch. P. Burge was next to go. bowled! by Lock for seven as the debacle] began. Lock struck again in his next over. The second ball pitched in the rough and R. Simpson, seeing; a scoring chance, swung hard. But the ball jumped and spun and took the upper edge of the bat to give T W. Graveney a catch halfway to the fence at backward square leg. The remaining Australian batsmen quickly joined the procession and well before the luncheon adjournament they were all out for 103. Scores:— M.C.C.
