Plan For Regional Co-operalion

The countries of South America intend to expand trade within their area by bringing about closer economic co-operation with a view to the gradual formation of a regional market.

This was announced today in a joint statement by the delegations of Brazil and Chile to the thirteenth session of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade The statement said that a declaration of this intent was opened for signature at Rio de Janeiro last October and had already been signed by Argentina. Bolivia. Brazil. Chile. Colombia. Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras. Mexico. Peru, and Uruguay. The G.A.T.T. session agreed that a statement be included in the record saying that its members "stand ready to extend to the countries concerned their assistance in this process.”
