Magistrate’s Court Man Remanded On Bail On Charge Of False Pretences

Arrested at the Christchurch airport last Friday as he was about to board an aircraft for Australia. James Robert Cook, aged 2.5 (Mr B. J. Drake) appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr E. A. Lee. S.M., on a charge of obtaining £165 by false pretences on November 21. He was remanded to December 1 on bail of £lOO in his own recognisance with two sureties of £ 100 each. ASSAULTED CONSTABLE Pleading guilty to a charge of assaulting Constable Jack George McDermott in the lawful execution of his duty. Jack Wipa, aged 23 (Mr R. G. de Goldi) was fined £lO. in default 10 days’ imprisonment. About 7.30 p.m. last Saturday Constable McDermott and another constable went to the Manchester Private Hotel to make some inquiries, said Sergeant T. A. Marson. While the accused, who had been drinking, was being interviewed he became antagonistic, and grabbed both constables by their tics. He was told to calm down but he had then pushed Constable McDermott against a wall. Wipa became incensed when the constables entered his room, said Mr de Goldi. He felt their intrusion was unwarranted and lost his temper. No blows had been struck and it was only a technical assault. FALSE PRETENCES Frapcis Lewis Gibson, aged 52 who pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain £l7 15s by false pretences on November 10. and Edward Arthur Halligan, aged 38, who pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain £2O 15s 6d by false pretences on November 10, were both remanded in custody to November 28 for a probation officer’s report and sentence. They also pleaded guilty to a joint charge of stealing a cheque book and forms valued at Is 6d. the property of G. S. Salter. About 1.40 p.m. on November 10 the police received a complaint from Eastmond’s Shoe Stores, Ltd., that Halligan had called at the shop and after selecting a pair of shoes had handed the assistant a cheque in payment, said Sergeant T. A. Marson. Halligan had admitted to the police that he had been drinking with Gibson earlier in the day, and when they were walking down Manchester street they decided to go into the office of Mr G. S. Salter, a lawyer. Halligan stayed at the door and Gibson went into the office, which was unattended, and took the blank cheques. Gibson could not be located at the time. About 8 p.m. the same day Thomas Joseph Sleeman, of the Ambassador’? Hotel, reported that Gibson had attempted to pay for his board with a cheque drawn on G. S. Salter, Sergeant Morson said. Both men were unemployed and had previous convictions. BREAKING AND ENTERING A woman, whose name was suppressed (Mr J. B. Weir), was remanded to November 28 for a probation officer’s report and sentence when she pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering the house of Charles Bell Anderson at 27 Shirley road, on November 23, with intent to commit a crime. On Sunday afternoon Mr And-, erson and his wife were sleeping in a front room of their home, and when Mr Anderson awoke about 5 p.m. he saw a woman leaving the room with two handbags, said Sergeant T. A. Marson. The woman was chased and apprehended, and the police were called. Mr Weir said that on the day the woman felt morbid and drank a considerable amount of liquor. She went to use a public telephone, but found she had no pennies. She asked a' boy where there was a telephone, and he pointed to Mr Anderson’s home. She admitted taking one purse, but she thought the other article was a cardigan. She had a number of children, and had no previous conviction of any kind. The woman was granted bail of £5O. with one surety of £5O. Papene Te Rongopatahi, who pleaded guilty to stealing sun glasses and cigarettes valued at £3 Is 5d on November 22 at the Addington racecourse, was fined £3. A stand in the outside enclosure at the Addington racecourse was evacuated hurriedly on Saturday and Mr Hugh Bell left sunglasses and cigarettes on a scat, Sergeant T. A. Marson said. When he returned the articles were missing. Mr Bell approached the accused, but he denied he had the articles. Questioned by Constable S. French the accused later admitted he had given the property to a I relative who was leaving the ' course. Rongopatahi was a widower i with children and received an j invalid's pension, Sergeant Marson said. He had no conviction.

ROGUE AND VAGABOND Found on board an overseas ship at Lyttelton in the early hours of Sunday morning a 20-ycar-old woman admitted to a constable that she had no place to live, had not worked for a month, and had been drifting from ship to ship with seamen paying her way, said Sergeant T. A. Marson. The accused, Paata Whakata, had been worried several times about her mode of life. Pleading guilty to a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond, having a previous conviction for this offence in March. 1957, she was remanded in custody to November 28 for a probation officer’s report. SHIP DESERTION Eric Gerald Bowles, aged 20. was convicted and fined £lO on a charge of deserting from the overseas ship Napier Star on March 1. Mr R. G. Penlington. for the informant, said that Bowles was a first offender and had left the ship in company with another seaman who was a habitual deserter. He was ordered to he detained under the provisions of the Shipping and Seamen Act. DRUNKENNESS Jack Stevens, aged 43, who pleaded guilty to being found drunk in High street on November 22. having been twice convicted for the same offence within the last six months, was fined £3. Stevens’s previous conviction was on Friday, the day before the present offence, said Sergeant T. A. Marson. REMANDED Leo Cyril Beri. aged 41 (Mr R. S. D. TwynehamL was remanded to November 27 on a charge of bookmaking on November 14 at Christchurch. Bail of £lOO, with one surety of £lOO, was renewed. William Charles Lamb, aged 35 (Mr S. H. Wood), was remanded to December 1 on a charge of bookmaking at Christchurch on November 22. Bail of £5O was granted, with one surety of £5O. Robert Alan Black, aged 22, a workman (Mr R. G. Penlington), was remanded to December 1 on charges of converting a car valued at £5OO and driving a car under the influence of drink or drugs. Noel Christian Rowland, aged 32. was remanded in custody to appear at Hamilton on December 1 on a charge of stealing £4 as a servant from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company: Ltd., at Hamilton on August 9. On a charge of being idle and disorderly on November 18. Hayton George Williams, aged 31, was remanded to November 27. He was allowed bail of £lOO in his own recognisance, and a surety of £lOO, and was ordered to report daily to the police. Raymond Bradbury, aged 41, a workman (Mr S. H. Wood), was remanded to December 1 on a charge of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. Bail was allowed in his own recognisance of £25, with one surety of £25. Alexander Simpson Dewar was remanded to December 8 on a charge of failing to comply with conditions of release on bail at Wellington on January 30 this year. (Before Mr A. P. Blair, S.M.) REMANDED Appearing on warrant for failing to report daily to the police in accordance with the terms of his bail, Norman Stanley Buchanan was remanded in custody to December 18. RELEASED ON DAIL David Peter Oakes, aged 18. a seaman, was released on bail of £5O in his own recognisance pending his deportation on a charge of deserting from the overseas ship Canberra Star. A condition of his release is that he lives in the Salvation Army Home. Christchurch, until he leaves New Zealand.
