“Bargain Sale” Of Airliners

(N.Z Press Association—Copi/riaht) LONDON, November 22.

Many airline chiefs forecast • that before long airliners now’ priced at £75.000 will be selling for about £60.000. according to an investigation by the Society of British Aircraft Constructors. It suggests a “huge bargain sale without queues or indeed any customers” may be on the way. i because jet and turbo-prop aircraft are taking over from pis-ton-engined airliners. The investigation showed there were more than 3500 large pistonengined airliners in service. Such types as Super Constellations. DC-6’s. and DC-7’s, will be up for sale to make way for fast turbine-powered planes, without which, it is claimed, no airline will be able to maintain its competitive position.

At the beginning of the year, a used Constellation or DC-6 could bring £500.000. but by June the prices w’ere halved and the buyers were getting more difficult to find. There were now more than 200 DC-7’s in service in the United States alone.
