Steel Merger Prevented

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, November 22. The Bethlehem Steel Corporation lost a bid to merge with the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company yesterday. Federal Judge Edward Weinr field, in a decision dealing with a previously-untested section of the Clayton Anti-Trust Act, said the merger would violate the law by lessening competition in the steel industry. The relevant section of the act says that any merger is illegal if its effect is to lessen competition or tend toward monopoly in any line of commerce in any market area.
