More Passengers This
Summer
More than 465.000 passengers flew the North Atlantic this summer, most of them—about 68.5 per cent—ln the economyclass cabins of the scheduled airlines, according to the International Air Transport Association.
Economy-class services carried 319.817 travellers; 77.623 flew firstclass. and 69.453 went tourist. In all 466.893 passengers flew the North Atlantic route in the three months, July, August, and September.
Reports compiled on behalf of the carriers by Mr E. S. Befanis. secretary of the T.A.T.A. traffic conference at New York, show passenger traffic for the quarter was increased by 35.2 per cent, compared with the same three months of 1957 and 28.1 per cent, compared with the second quarter of this year.
From July to September, 1957. the number of passengers carried was 345.449. In the second quarter this year the number was 335,615.
During the quarter T.A.T.A. airlines operated 10,253 flights over the route, an increase of 25.4 per cent. The number of seats, however. increased by 39 4 per cent., because of thr introduction of new and larger aircraft and the greater seating capacity of the economy class.
West-bound travellers outnumbered those flving east during the summer by 277.944 to 188,949.
