COLLISION IN FOG

N.Z. Freighter Damaged

I (Rec. 11 p.m.) HOBART, November 24. I The Union Steam Ship Company’s freighter, Karoon, and the Australian coastal cargo ship, Warringa, owned by Huddart Parker. Ltd., arrived at Hobart today with their bows almost stove in. They collided off Eddystone Point, on the north-eastern tip of Tasmania, yesterday morning in a thick fog. The Karoon's bow was almost I torn apart on the starboard side, i from the superstructure to near 1 the waterline. The Warringa’s [bow had a big gaping hole also ■ almost to the waterline. | When they collided the War- ! ringa was sailing from Melbourne j to Hobart with general cargo, and [the Karoon from Hobart 1o [Melbourne. Both carried fuli ! cargoes. I The fog was so thick that the i vessels were only about a ship's • length away when they sighted ieach other. Orders to reverse [engines could not prevent them . colliding. I None of the crews was injured. ! But bows of both ships are so | badly damaged that it is doubtful whether they can be repaired fully in Hobart. Temporary repairs | probably will be made so that the ships can go to Melbourne for | overhaul.
