“RADIOMEN ASLEEP”
Traffic Control At Rome Field

On the day a collision killed 31 persons in a British European Airways Viscount over Italy, two radio operators at Rome’s main airport were asleep, it was revealed last night according to the “Daily Express.” This had been included in one of 50 highly critical reports sent to London by world airline pilots about air traffic control in Italy. The “Daily Express” reported that on October 22 when an Italian jet fighter hit the Viscount over Anzio; a Scandinavian Airlines System pilot was repeatedly trying to contact Ciampino airport, Rome. On landing the pilot went to the radio room. He found both operators asleep. The secretary of the International Federation of Airline Pilots’ Associations. Captain Charles Jackson, said in London tonight: “We have no reason to doubt this report.” The “Daily Express” said that the sleeping radio operators would not have affected the Viscount. The case was cited as» an example of Italian inefficiency. Captain Jackson said he planned to publish the reports in full unless he was assured that Italy would overhaul its system of air control.
