STUDENT NURSES’ WORK

Parents’ Day At Hospital

Student nurses at the new preliminary training school at the Christchurch Public Hospital showed various aspects of their work when a parentss* day was held yesterday afternoon. In the modern hall which forms part of the new block for trainees, about 70 guests were shown, by a series of sketches, the type of training done during the three months’ course nurses undergo before taking up full ward duties. The present group will be the first to complete a course in the new buildings, which were opened officially about three months ago. Demonstrations or brief explanations were given on such subjects as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology, psychology and mental hygiene. Trends in the history of nursing were portrayed by 10 dolls dressed by a previous class. The sketches ended with a guide to personal and community health and by first lessons in obstetrics and general nursing. It was the first time a parents’ day had been held for girls taking the preliminary course at the hospital. Specially invited guests were received by the tutorial sisters of the school (Sisters D. R. Newman and D. McDonald) and included the Lady Superintendent (Mrs M. Chambers), the Medical Superintendent (Dr. T. Morton), members of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and the nursing staff.

The commentator was Nurse L. Frear, assisted by Nurses E. Sedlar, R. Gardner, H. Davidson. J. Anderson. G. Parr, J. Duncan, G. Dennis, E. Coates, G. Meade, M. Cullen, L. Mowat and B. Mclntyre as demonstrators.
