RACING Well Cut Selected For Southland Win

Well Cut, one of two horses from the Gore stable of R. J. Cochrane engaged in the City Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Southland Racing Club’s spring meeting at Invercargill today, is generally’ expected to manage top-weight of 9-0 competently. Well Cut’s immediate form background in fields of moderate strength in Southland has been solid.

His latest of three placings, after a win in the Spring Handi- c cap at Wyndham last month, was behind Ark Royal in the President’s Handicap at Gore on ] Labour Day. Well Cut is one of i three six-year-olds in a field * which is comprised mostly of ‘ ageing horses. He will probably be a strong favourite and should prove capable of justifying the i support. ? Cassius and Cornflake are closest 1 to Well Cut in the handicap. Both J will carry 8-8. The prospect of < firm going is unlikely to favour I Cassius, but Cornflake has shown * all his best form on firm ground, j The Lo Zingaro eight-year-old had ( two of three starts in a fresh I campaign at the New Zealand Cup 9 meeting, but failed to race prom- ( inently. However, Cornflake’s ( best is particularly good and in the weaker class today he will | have to be considered seriously. < The Lightweights | Master David and Lady Verona I are two likely lightweights. Master David failed to make an impression in three starts under high- g weight conditions at Riccarton, ( but earlier in the season was run- I ner-up to Tamarisk over one mile i and three furlongs in the Ashbur- $ ton Cup. The relief in weight and $ the weaker class should help him. ( Lady Verona was a fast finisher < for fourth at her last start in the ( President's Handicap at Gore on j Labour Day. The Ruthless mare did not receive the best of the! | running in the event and should 1 be well suited by the extra fur- ’ long this time. Southland Guineas j 1 The second leg of the double;s and the feature race on the pro-1 gramme is the Southland Guineas.’! Struan will probably be a pro-* nounced favourite in this event.;. He is one of two open company'; horses in the field. The other is the Wingatui filly Minglow. It is‘ ( not expected, however, that she } will be Struan’s strongest oppon- ( ent. His strongest challenger is t likely to be Matlock, a Ruthless colt trained at Wingatui by A. I. . Powell for Mr G. J. Barton. Struan and Matlock have met j three times this season and on i each occasion there has been 1 little between them. Matlock beat ] Struan in a hack sprint on the - first day of the Dunedin spring meeting in September, but when ! they met in the Dunedin Guineas ; Strtian followed Braganza home j and Matlock was third. Between , that race and the New Zealand Derby, Struan won his way out of ■ hack company by succeeding in two middle distance events at Gore. Matlock completed his Derby preparation with an im- : pressive win against a good field of hack milers at Motukarara. I When they met in the Derby. L Struan finished fourth and Matlock was fifth. They are expected'to be the principals in the finish h today. Carbonett. one of six fillies in'; the field, will not be without pros-/ poets. This daughter of Red Mars and Marcia, which is trained by ( D G. O'Neill, at Wingatui. found the class and the distance in the New Zealand Oaks beyond her. ' but was a promising second behind Aircraft in the nine-furlong Hagley Hack Handicap on the : first day at Riccarton. The weather has been fine and ] the track will be hard and fast. j' Selections:— 11 a.m.—Kew Hack Hurdles: i Arabian Chief.
