Speak
A Canterbury scientist. Dr. I. D. Blair, head of the microbiology department at Canterbury Agricultural College. Lincoln, will be among scientific workers who will give papers at the biennial meeting of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science, which will begin in Hamilton next Thursday. Technical papers on aspects of soil microbiology will be given on the second morning of the conference by Dr. Blair and Dr. R. H. Thornton, a former student of Dr. Blair at Lincoln, who was recently associated with the work leading to the identification nf the fungus responsible for facial eczema. Dr. Thornton is of the Soil Bureau. On the first morning of the conference there will be a symposium on the Waikato basin, and in the afternoon there will be an inspection of the soil advisory service of the Galloway Laboratories. which are associated with the Rukuhia soil research station. In the evening Dr. J. K. Dixon. Deputy-Director of the Soil Bureau, will deliver the presidential address. On the afternoon of thr second day. conference members will visit experimental areas at the soil research station and see a demonstration of techniques of soil survey. The final day will take the form of an all-day excursion through areas in the Waikato which depict soil problems. _
