Items Of Interest This Week
A comprehensive collection of tropical foliage and flowering plants is on display this week in the Cuningham glasshouse. Upstairs in the gallery may be seen Begonia species and varieties. Bougainvillea, Kohleris amabile and Kalancboe blossfeldians. At the northern end of the gallery Petrea volubilis. the purple wreath flower, is in bloom, and on the western side Stephanotis floribunda is just coming into flower
Downstairs, on the bench just inside the main door, gloxinias may be seen in flower Hydrangeas
A massed display of hydrangeas is a feature in the centre of the Townend glasshouse at present Along the northern side of the house is a staging of Streptocarpus in a variety of colours, and on the southern side show pelargoniums. Other plants on display are Zonal pelagoniums and house plants.
Cacti and succulents from various regions of the world are on display in the Garrick Cactu and Succulent house. Rose Garden
West of the Archery lawn is a comprehensive collection of herbaceous paeonies which are now coming into full flower, while at present the herbaceous border is very attractive, the plants in flower including thalictrum, geum, lychnis, campanula and Oriental poppy.
One of the most attractive sections at present is the Bog garden where many waterside plants are flowering and the waterlilies are now at their best. Across the river in the Woodland is the Primula garden with many interesting plants in flower, and near the Nurses’ Home, is a fine collection of Rose species. Special Trees Two trees worthy of special attention this week are the Epaulette tree (Pterostyrax hispida» and the Storax (Styrax japonica) These two trees be long to the same family—Styracaea—and both are valuable small garden trees because of their showy racemes of fragrant white flowers. The Epaulette tree may be seen in the shrub border at the northern end of, and behind the herbaceous border, and the Storax is beneath the large Monterey cypress near, the Cuningham house. Band Programme On Sunday. November 23, the Scottish Society’s Band will play ion the Arclfery lawn from 2.30 I p.m.
Display houses are open on week-days from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. •to 4 p.m. At week-ends these houses are open in the afternoons only from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The gates to the Gardens close daily at 7.45 p.m.
