Lawn Tennis SUSPENSION OF MERVYN ROSE
Exclusion From Davis Cup
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright» MELBOURNE, Nov. 19. The Australian Davis Cup tennis player, Mervyn Rose, said today that "as usual" he had been made a “scapegoat.” Rose was commenting on the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia’s announcement that his suspension over overseas expenses would not be lifted until January 31 next. This excludes Rose from competing in Australia’s defence of the Davis Cup in the challenge round to be played in Brisbane in late December. "It has been happening to me for more than 10 years in Australian tennis," said Rose. "If I am to be dealt with in this way, it would seem the L.T.A.A. would be justified in starting a general purge to inquire into the expenses of the 30 other official and unofficial tennis tourists. It might be a good idea if expenses allowed for amateur tennis managers were also investigated.” Rose said he had not officially heard of an offer from Jack Kramer to turn professional, but in view of the L.T.A.A.’s action. “I would be silly not to make further inquiries about it." “You cannot make money out of amateur tennis, and as my entire livelihood is centred on playing tennis and visiting agents of the sporting goods firms that I represent, I will now have to look around for something else." Rose said. He said he was not very worried about missing his chance to play in this year's Davis Cup team. “Playing in the Davis Cup series is not so marvellous as some people imagine. If the Australian team wins you’re a hero, but if the team loses, everyone says you are a no-hoper,” Rose said.
