HERITAGE IN CANTERBURY

Income Below

Expenditure

“The work of Heritage in giving advice and guidance such as is denied to those young people who lack a father’s care is probably of as great a value as monetary assistance.” said Mr H. S. Southern last evening in his report to the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of Heritage. An average of £2O was spent on each child, but a considerable number of them did not need monetary assistance. The increased number of children attending post-primary shools indicated that spending by Heritage would have to be maintained for several years. Mr Southern said nearly all the children who sat School Certificate last year were successful. A number also passed University Entrance. Regular reports I were received by Heritage on ithe children’s progress at all stages of their education, and in | every instance the children reaped advantages which could 1 not have been gained without tire assistance and encouragement of Heritage. 359 Children The number of children on the Heritage register tins year was 359 —16 had been crossed off because they litid either readied the age of 21, were married, or had transferred to other districts. There was a slight increase in membership during the year—--1583 compared with 1575 in 1957. The total income for the year was £1760 and expenditure was £2463 —a deficiency of £703. Mr Southern thanked M- J. Breward for giving swimming instruction to the children during the year. He also thanked volunteer workers for their co-opera-tion and assistance. Officers elected were: president, Mr H. S. Southern; vicepresidents. the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) and Messrs ,J. Henty and J. Stewart; executive. Dr. W. Mark Brown. Messrs C. U Bacon, J.
