MALVERN LEADS
Sub-Association Shield Playing Malvern at Haglcy Park yesterday, in a Sub-Associa-tion Shield match, Suburban was forced to follow on after being dismissed for 155, in response to Malvern's first innings total of 265. At stumps Surburban’s second innings score was 46 for the loss of four wickets. Malvern, batting first, got away to a good start, scoring 36 for the first wicket and the same for the second. At lunch three wickets were down for 166. with J. Gunn, the former St. Andrew’s College player, having scored a very patient 40 not out. He was to be run out later for a well compiled 68. including nine fours and two sixes. He was particularly severe on D. McKnight, the slow leg-break bowler. With A. F. Wright scoring 49 and G. Gibson 49 the scoreboard read 208 for five but the later batsman did not offer so much resistance, the side being all out for 265. Earlier in the Malvern innings G. T. Wright, when batting very well, was struck on the nose. He had to retire, but on resuming his innings he did not look so comfortable and fell to a simple catch. J. Moorhead, three for 56, G. Smart, three for 56. and E. Anderson, three for 93, shared the wicket. They all bowled ; very well in trying conditions, i but did not receive much assistI ance from the Suburban fields- | men. who dropped several catches. The ground fielding was much better. The Malvern i total was scored in 210 minutes. Suburban, beginning its i innings at 2.40 p.m., with T. Smitheram and A. Spence, got ! away to a fair start but lost four j wickets for 64 by tea. G. I Anderson was the only batsman to show any opposition to the Malvern attack and top scored with 39. R. Cullen hit hard for his 22 and M. Willis, 22, showed encouraging form. It was J. Adams, a slow leftarm spinner, who caused most trouble to the Suburban batsmen/ He flighted his deliveries well and maintained a steady length; his five for 30 was well deserved. The Malvern fielding was of a high standard. Following on, Suburban was again in trouble, this time to A. F. Wright, another left-arm bowler, but much quicker than Adams. He soon had three for nine and the scoreboard read four for 15. *R Duncan and G. Anderson again held up the attack and at stumps had taken the score to 46 - > 4 1 Play will be resumed today.
