RESIDENTS OF AVONHEAD
Meeting To Form Organisation
In a garage of about 400 square feet in Ravenna street, 80 persons met on Tuesday evening. They were residents of the newlyformed housing area near Yaldhurst road. Few of the persons had seen each other before; yet within 20 minutes of the begin-, ing of the meeting which had* been called to form an organisation which could appeal as a body for “rights,” an interim chairman, secretary and committee had been appointed. *• The meeting was not a particularly live one, although at one stage a resident got right away from the point of the meeting—to organise an official meeting at a later date. The resident fired his neighbours to cheering point when he told them that the district was short of many necessities. He said that a bus service was needed badly in the Avonhead road district. The residents were paying very high rates and for this they should be given for amenities which were necessary for a small suburban community. He mentioned a lack of public telephone call boxes, no sewerage, and poor roads. The resident was called to order by the chairman (Mr J. Hutchinson), but not until after he was cheered and clapped loudly by others. Mr Hutchinson said that he agreed that there were many necessities, but a proper committee would be formed to look into those things later. The meeting was given the advice of Mr M. A. Connelly, member of Parliament for Riccarton, and Mr C. L. Austin, representative for the Wairarapa Riding on the Waimairi County Council. They replied to questions. It was decided that another meeting of the Avonhead residents would be held within 21 days. The interim officers elected were:—Chairman, Mr J. Hutchinson: secretary, Mr E. D. Kwok; committee, MeMssrs H. G. Riches, N. James. R. W. Conway, N. Burnell, J. W. Graham, V. Clarke. T. H. Bitmead, R. Crawford. F. J. Cowlishaw, W. J. Campbell and E. F. Braithwaite.
Beer For Fiji
Beer will be produced in Fiji this year on completion of a brewery erected in Suva by Australian interests. Hitherto the major portion o$ Fiji’s annual beer consumption of nearly 500,000 gallons has been met by imports from Australia. There is some daqger that New Zealand will soon lose the small proportion of the market it now holds. New Zealand boxmakers, however, may find the brewery a useful customer for cartons. Bottles on hand are expected to last for two years.
