Personal Items The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) visited the factory of Lane. Walker, Rudkin, Ltd., in Montreal street yesterday. He was the guest of the directors at morning tea. and was then taken on a tour of inspection of tne , various departments by Mr A. H. Lee. managing director. The Registrar of the University of Auckland, Mr J. A. Kirkness. will leave this week to visit universities in Britain under an Imperial Relations Trust fellowship. He has been granted leave from the university until next May. Last year, Mr Kirkness visited universities in Australia. He was previously Registrar of Canterbury Agricultural College. Dr. J. H. Darwin, principal scientific officer. Applied Mathematics Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington, has been awarded a United States National Academy of Science fellowship. He will undertake two years of post-graduate research at the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of Canterbury University and gained his doctorate at Manchester University.—(P.A.)

Mr V. H. Reid, resident delegate for Wanganui, was re-elect-ed chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association's council last evening. Mr Reid, who is a headmaster, is one of the longest-serving officers on the council. The meeting also w’elcomed back the West Coast resident delegate. Miss Doreen Brown, who was an official at the Empire Games at Cardiff.
