SCHOOL FIRE ESCAPES

Constant Check Requested

{New Zeatana Press Assoctaliont WELLINGTON, Nov. 17. The Department of Education has requested all schools to check continuously and keep careful watch on all outside stairways and fire escapes. The department’s warning was given after a fire in an Auckland school when a fire escape collapsed as a fireman was climbing it. ‘‘ln this instance.” says the circular, ‘‘the consequences were not serious, though they might well have been had the escape been required for evacuation purposes.” Escape-ways usually received attention at the same time as the rest of the building to which they were attached, but through greater exposure to weather, checking might be required more frequently if the fire escapes were to remain in a safe condition.
