Submarine Telemachus Arrives In Lyttelton

H M.N.Z.S. Kaniere and H.M. Submarine Telemachus arrived at

Lyttelton yesterday morning from Auckland and berthed at No. 4 East, the submarine being moored outside the Kaniere. They had fine weather from Auckland until off Cook Strait on Sunday when they ran into a strong north-west wind and heavy seas. When nearing Lyttelton yesterday morning, they ran into a strong southwest wind, accompanied by a sharp drop in the temperature. The crews were interested to see a light coating of snow on the top of Mount Herbert.

Later the Kaniere left Lyttelton to go to the assistance of the disabled Port Waikato. The Kaniere is scheduled to leave Lyttelton tomorrow for 'Dunedin, where she will take aboard five scientists and oceaniographists. members of the ! National Institute of Oceanjography. Since then she has been based at Sydney, with the exception of a refit at Singapore every 20 months. The Telemachus will return to the United 1 Kingdom next year. The commanding officer of the z Telemachus is LieutenantCommander J. M. Haigh-Lumby, who entered the Royal Naval College. Dartmouth in January. 1942. He joined the submarine service in 1949 and has served in the Seneschal. Artful and Tactician as first lieutenant and in the Sturdy and Telemachus as commanding officer. On Friday morning the Telemachus and the Kaniere will carry out sea exercises outside Otago Heads. The Telemachus will remain at Dunedin until Monday when she will sail for Sydney.
