FAST GALLOPS AT RICCARTON

Balfast, Lochwood, Mediterranean

Balfast, Mediterranean, and Lochwood. North Island stayers engaged in the New Zealand Cup, ran fast mile gallops 33ft out on the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. Mediterranean’s stablemate, Gibraltar, an impressive trialist over seven furlongs, and Golden Bank sprinted six furlongs brilliantly. Gibraltar and Golden Bank are fit North Island for the Riccarton Handicap.

The Riccarton-trained Braganza and the Woodville filly. Routine, shaped well in their final trials for the New Zealand Derby. The outside of the course proper and the plough gave fast footing. Balfast (A. J. Stokes) and Mediterranean (N. Eastwood) ran a mile in Imin 43 3-ssec. keeping up a strong gallop to record 51 sec tor the last half-mile. They finished abreast. . Balfast appears to have thrived since the Wellington spring meeting, where he was runner-up in the Wellington Handicap. Lochwood (G. W. Mein) and Summer’s End (Miss F. Kerri recorded Imin 43 l-ssec for their mile, finishing abreast in a small gap behind Avenge (N. Eastwood), which joined in for the last six furlongs. Lochwood and Summer’s End ran the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. This gallop showed Summer's End’s fitness for the Hagley Handicap. Kelp (T. Wilson) led Nasib (B. S Finlayson) by a head and was a length and a half clear of Robin Hood (A. J. Stokes) finishing a mile in Imin 44 4-ssec, the last half in 51 3-ssec. Form Horse Kelp has good form, and may take beating in the Hagley Handicap. Braganza (A. J. Stokes) showed to advantage in a trial over a mile and a quarter with Count Pierre (L. McGuire), El Jefe (G. W. Mein), Struan (F. H. Skelton), and Barney (B. Mcllroy). Braganza did not settle for a time, but was soon going well and won the trial by a length from Count Pierre. El Jefe and Struan were close behind and Barney was beaten off. They ran from the nine furlongs in 2min *lsec. from the mile in Imin 45sec. and the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec. Count Pierre took a little time to loosen up, but his was also a satisfactory Derby trial. Struan, a Derby candidate from Southland, has encouraging form for his first test over a mile and a half. This long-striding Callander colt is not a good track worker. Gold Crown (R. W. Gould) led Medbury (C. T. Wilson) by half a length after running a mile in Imin 45 l-ssec. They quickened to record 50 2-ssec for the last half. Filly’s Derby Trial Routine (V. R. Coley) worked away from the nine furlongs and joined Hauparu Bay <V. J. Sellars) and Masai (W. Hanlin) at the mile. They ran abreast from there to the finish in Imin 43sec. recording 52sec for the last halfmile. It was a good Derby trial by Routine, the only filly in the classic. Teaka (A. J. tested to run a mile in Imin : 46 4-ssec. He finished three- ’ quarters of a length ahead of his ) stablemate, Olympic Flame (D. j J. Thistoll) after running his last half mile in 521-ssec. Shoal (C. McDonald), a Ric-carton-trained Cup hope, ran her ' mile in Imin 47aec, slackening speed after recording 514-ssec for the first half. Gibraltar (A. E. Skinner) showed high speed in a sevenfurlong trial with Hunted (A. H. Eastwood) and Bagman (N. Eastwood). Bagman tailed off in the . straight and Gibraltar drew away to beat Hunted by a length and a half, recording Imin 28 l-ssec for the distance and 49sec for the last half mile. Hearth Rug (R. J. Skelton) recorded Imin 48sec for a mile after a stronger opening half in 53 3-ssec. Rustic (L. J. Ellis), Ruve (N. Eastwood), and Allemande (W. Beck) sprinted six furlongs on terms in Imin 17 4-ssec. the last four in 514-ssec. Rustic and Ruve are form runners for the Spring Plate. Summer Glow Sprint, The Takanini pair. Summer Glow (G. F. Hughes) and Aircraft (J. Watton), kept up strong gallops over six furlongs, recording Imin 181-ssec and 49 4-ssec for the last half mile. Summer Glow is in solid condition for the New Zealand Cup. Golden Bank <V. J. Sellars) made one of the outstanding efforts of the morning by sprinting six furlongs in Imin 14sec. the last four in 48 4-ssec. Whiohau <R. L. W. Mein), two of the early workers on the course, ran half a mile on terms in 50 4-ssec. Melanion <G. F. Hughes) and Fountainhead <J. Watton) followed in 48 l-ssec. The Takanini stablemates ran on terms all the wav and did their work well. The Derby favourite Up and Coming <G. F. Hughes) was given a sprint task. , He dashed home from the half mile in 48 2-ssec. Sarcelle Well Clear Sarcelle <N'. Eastwood) raised hopes for a local Stewards’ victory with a very good five-furlong trial. She left Cheyenne (W. Royal Guy (J. R. O'Neill) led Copenhagen (A. J. Stokes) a rival Stewards’ Handicap candidate, by two lengths after running half a mile in 49 l-ssec. Sheonat (J. Beck) and Bridal Bay were paired over five furlongs run in Imin 3 4-ssec. They dashed over the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec. , Buck Jones (A. E. Skinner) and Mhor (W. Beck) were xunning on terms, and Malona (N.
