Man Faces Eight Charges
It was alleged that over a, ! period of two years and a half the accused had obtained well i over £5OOO by false pretences.! ; the Crown Prosecutor (Mr P. T. j Mahon) said in the Supreme Court I yesterday when Lionel Nigel Dean, a company director, ap- ! pea red on trial before Mr Justice McCarthy and a jury. Dean faced eight charges of false pretences to which he pleaded not guilty. He was repre--1 sented by Mr B. J. Drake. Mr Mahon said that in October.! 1955, a company named The* Southern Cross Engineering Cbm-' pany, Ltd., was incorporated and Dean, who held £4OOO worth of shares, was appointed managing, director at a salary of £lOOO a year. The firm was engaged in ; importing and retailing engineering and electrical equipment and , manufacturing. [ Dean held the position until. | March. 1958. when he came before I the Court because of certain finan- ! cial transactions in which he had been involved during the last two ( vears and a half. It was alleged that on differept .occasions during that time he had, j obtained money totalling wellj I over £5OOO by false pretences. I said Mr Mahon. Accused had apparently been | living beyond his means, and be-' ing unable to earn enough money lin the conventional way had reI sorted to the simple expedient of living on other people’s money.
