creasing population density in the area and the encroachment of housing on the works location, it was decided some time ago to install a gas scrubbing system on the superphosphate plant. “The unit was designed and constructed according to the mosti modern ideas on the subject, and the liquid effluent disposal problem was overcome by means of an original modification, involving the return of this material to the process.” In fact, the water effluent is used again and again in the plant. “The actual gas cleaning operation involves an initial primary tower where the gas is humidified by contact with water sprays, a long conduit in which the gas is cooled and condensed, and a final section consisting of two very large wooden chambers where the gas is scrubbed by considerable quantities of water. “This water is hurled about the chambers by motorised flingers—circular plastic discs revolving on the end of rods, which dip into troughs of water. This water absorbs the acid gases and dust.” According to Mr Higgins, “the cleaned gas leaves the scrubber in an innocuous state, and a fan ejects it from a tall stack. The scrubber was brought into operation on July 7 this year, and has reduced the acid discharge to a very low level.”
