SECOND LEG OF DOUBLE

Good Display By Royal Harmony

The Blenheim-owned and trained four-year-old, Royal Harmony, gave a grand display of trotting to win the Keenan Handicap, the second leg of the double at the Kaikoura Trotting Club's meeting yesterday. He broke at the start and lost about 50 yards. Amelia set an easy pace and the field bunched over the last mile.

Royal Harmony rushed three wide round the field with about seven furlongs to run rnd joined Amelia in the lead over the last five furlongs. They raced away from their opponents in the back straight and turned into the straight together four lengths in front of Mighty Ruston, Reprimand, Firestreak and Temple Scott.

Amelia and Royal Harmony had a great struggle all the way up the straight, with Royal Harmony doing slightly the better to win by a head.

Amelia again forced most of the pace and held on strongly for second, half a length in front of the favourite. Reprimand, which received a shocking run after breaking early. He was two lengths in front of the galloping Firestreak, which was subsequently disqualified. Mighty Ruston was right up next, ahead of Gay Cord, Clackmannan and Temple Scott. He was fifth when the field had settled down and moved up to follow Amelia with six furlongs left. Reprimand worked clear with about five furlongs left, and he turned for home two lengths in front of Happy Sandy, which broke, Amelia. Temple Scott, which also broke. Brandywine and Trigo Reprimand finished full of running and won with something in hand by four lengths o Amelia, which is trained at Kaikoura, trotted on gamely for second, two lengths in front of Trigo, one of the baekmarkers. Trigo gradually Improved his position and finished strongly. Mighty Ruston made up ground in the straight to finish fourth, ahead of Temple Scott, with Gay Cord, Happy Sandy, Brandywine, and Clackmannan next. The majority of the field made mistakes at the start. Navua Gets Up Navua gained a long overdue win when she got up in the last few strides to shade Royal Prince tn the Vice-President's Handicap. Medium Blue set a fair pace and had the majority of the field in trouble before the last half-mile. Navua was in third piece at this stage, and she gradually closed on Medium Blue, with Royal Prince moving up on the outside of her racing to the straight. This trio was clear of Marjoy by fourth lengths, with two lengths to Dark Louise. Medium Blue was soon feeling the strain and she began to tire. Royal Prince moved through to take the lead, with Navua being forced to come three wide to make her run. She gradually overhauled Royal Prince and gained the decision by a nose. Royal Prince was just behind Navua for most of the race, and he held on for second, half a length in front of Medium Blue. Marjoy battled on for fourth, six lengths in front of the favourite. Dark Louise, which was never a danger after starting from the second line. Night Watch was a fair sixth, after covering extra ground. Private Lady Surprises Private Lady, which was having her first start at a totalisator meeting. upset calculations with a win in the Stewards’ Handicap. With Couthie, Private Lady was one of the best beginners. She raced on the wheel of the pacemaker, Couthie, all the way, this pair being followed into the straight by Count Medoro, with Elan, Space Patrol, and Countess Derby handiest of the others. Private Lady raced past Couthie about the furlong, and fought on gamely to win well by a length. Couthie, the favourite, had every chance, but did not run on as well as expected. She held on to take second place, half a length in front of Count Medoro. which received a good run all the way.

Alison's Pride made up a little ground for fourth, ahead of Countess Derby, with Elan, Space Patrol, and Flag Four following. Charles Junior, Awarua, Zenith, and Flag Four gave ground at the start.

Dignus Out Of Cup

Dignus will not start in the New Zealand Cup at Addington next Tuesday. His trainer, J. D. Litten, said yesterday that the horse was not forward enough in condition and would be withdrawn.

Dignus’s preparation was interrupted when he had a chip of bone removed froi.* a leg a few weeks ago. The Belfast trainer, C. S. Donald, is confined to bed and may not be able to drive on cup day. His cup candidate, Brahman, will be driven by D. C. Watts at today’s trials at Addington.
