MASS TRIALS IN AFRICA

1100 Women To Appear JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 3. Nearly 1100 African women will appear at mass trials today on charges arising from demonstrations they staged against the compulsory issue of identity cards. Altogether more than 2000 African women have been arrested during their 11-day-old protest campaign, the most recent of a series they have staged sporadically for more than a year. The demonstrations have been marked by the women, many with babies on their backs, singing, shouting, stamping their feet and giving the thumbs-up sign of the African National Congress, the leading African political organisation.
