N.Z. CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC WOMEN

The tenth Dominion conference of the Catholic Women’s League will open in Christchurch on Tuesday. After a special mass in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) will open the conference at Maryknoll. There will be visiting delegates from Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin and it is expected that members will attend from many parts of New Zealand. The league has 9000 members and 116 branches in addition to headquarters in each of the, four main centres.

Remits on a variety of subjects will come before the conference and there will be discussion on topical subjects bearing in particular on the problems of women and the home.

Bishop Joyce will address the conference on the evening of October 1 and the Rev. Father Bernard O'Brien, SJ, will speak on Tuesday afternoon. Miss Mary McLean, who has recently returned from the Pan-Pacific international conference, will speak on Thursday afternoon about the Tokyo conference and her experiences in Japan. On Wednesday afternoon there

will be a drive for visitors -which will include a visit to Mt Magdala and Marylands. A reception, will be held that evening at the Winter Garden to welcome delegates and visitors. In addition to the Dominion president (Mrs B. O’Brien) and the Dominion secretary (Miss G. McDevitt), both from Wellington, the following delegates will be attending: Auckland diocese.— Mrs T. Hickey (president). Mrs J. Johnson, Mrs A. Faire, Mrs C. Doherty,, Miss A. Markey; Wellington diocese.—Mrs P. Williams (president), Mrs S. Slowey, Mrs M. Ellis, Mrs D. J. Ryan, Miss N. Alexander; Christchurch diocese. —Mrs J. E. Amos (president), Mrs J. Donnelly, Mrs N. A. Cameron, Mrs F. Chapman, Mrs F. A. Simmons; Dunedin diocese.—Mrs C. P. Kerr (president), Mrs E. Cosgriff, Mrs j. Rooney, ’ Miss M. A.' Nyhon, Miss K. Ford.
