UNIFIED TRAFFIC CONTROL

Transport Department Favoured

Unified control of road traffic under the Transport Department is favoured by the South Island Motor Union. The change was recommended by the joint committee of both motor unions, and has the support of the North Island Motor Union. What was the object of a change? asked Mr R. A. Douglas (Otago), at the S.I.M.U. conference in Christchurch yesterday. There were many advantages in local traffic officers being immediately available to their employing councils and in their special knowledge of local needs. Otago saw no reason to interfere.

Co-operation among the various enforcement authorities—local traffic departments, Transport Departments, and police—was good, said Mr C< H. Harvey (Southland). Nelson had experience of control within a city by the Transport Department, said Mr C. V. Neale. The system worked admirably, and the City Council was permitted to exercise a good deal of cover over the activities of the Government officers. The motion was carried without further discussion or any fresh statement of reasons for a change in control.
