‘OLD FOGIES’ IN PARLIAMENT

Junior Chamber Members’ View (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 26. The feeling of many people was that the country was being governed and controlled by “old fogies,” a Wellington delegate declared today at the annual convention of New Zealand Junior Chambers of Commerce. “Thete is a feeling that young people do not express their opinidhs and that young people do not get a voice in Parliament,” he added. ‘‘l think it is good policy that this organisation should express its views to the Government and to the people.” He was speaking to a remit: “That as a matter of policy it is competent for thjs organisation to place its finding on matters of national importance before the Government of the day.” The remit was passed. An amendment by Gisborne delegates that the movement make known ‘‘its views” as well as

“its findings” met strong opposi tion.

“If we decide to give our views” said Mr Tohill (Dunedin), “we will end up in a few years time as a passive organisation putting forward opinions to the Government just the same as a lot of other organisations.

“I feel we should do this most sparingly, and approach the Government only after the most stringent and careful examination.”
