Mr Holloway’s Views (From Oui Own Keporter) WELLINGTON, September 26. The Minister in charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr Holloway) agrees with Dr. Trevor Hatherton that New Zealand scientists working in the Antarctic should be paid more. He said as much when the interview with Dr. Hatherton published in "The Press” today was shown to him thk afternoon. “Of course, our scientists should be paid more,” said Mr Holloway. “They are doing a wonderful job down there, and as far as their abilities are concerned they are as well equipped to do it as their Russian, Australian or American opposite numbers.” Then Mr Holloway added a rider.

“Of course, the only way .we ?an pay them more is to make an

extra levy on the New Zealand taxpayer. The Antarctic programme is costing a lot of money With our appropriation, we cannot afford to pay our men more.

I admit that they deserve it. What do you think the taxpayer would say?”
