FISHING OFF ICELAND

Clash Aboard Trawler

[Rec. 10 p.m.) REYKJAVIK, September 26.

The Icelandic Prime Minister (Mr Hermann Jonasson) has complained about the “impudence" of the British trawler, Paynter, which was boarded by Icelandic coastguards yesterday. The Paynter, Mr Jonasson said in a statement last night, was the only one of 10 trawlers fishing within the 12-mile limit, which did not retire when their protecting British frigate, Diana, left for an Icelandic port with a sick seaman requiring emergency treatment.

Icelandic coastguard vessels had not intended arresting or pursuing the trawlers while the Diana was away, the statement said. The captain of the Paynter remained in the 12-mile limit and was boarded by coastguards. But, Mr Jonasson said, he ordered them to leave the trawler because he thought foreign countries might accuse Iceland of allowing the Diana to go to the port for tactical and not humanitarian reasons.

A fight took place between the coastguards and the fishermen and an Icelander and a British seaman were reported to be hurt. Mr Jonasson alleged that the British seamen used sticks and the coastguards were unarmed.
