AIR BATTLES

TAIPEH, September 25. American and Nationalist sources said today that the high standard of training and better radar direction was responsible for the Nationalist pilots’ continuing successes over the Communists. The sources were commenting on a series of air battles over the Formosa Straits area. The Nationalists claimed to have shot down 10 M.I.G. 17’s without loss. The Nationalists were flying F-86’s equipped with six .50 calibre machine guns. The M.I.G. has 22 millimetre cannon. It also is faster and has higher rate of climb. Nationalist Air Force sources said their fighter pilots had a ratio of nine to one over the Communists in Formosa Straits air fighting. Many of the Nationalist pilots have well over 1000 flying hours in jet fighters.
