PAYMENTS TO FISHERMEN
Conference Next Month
Prices paid to fishermen for their catches and the over-all disposal of stocks of fish held by the industry will be discussed at a conference in Wellington on October 6 between the New Zealand Fishermen’s Federation and the New Zealand Fish Wholesalers’ Association.
Although dissatisfaction with low prices being paid is general throughout New Zealand, a “strike” by fishermen tying up, their trawlers and line boats as a method of gaining better prices from wholesalers is most unlikely. Reports that an attempt was being made to organise a “strike” in all fishing ports were ridiculed yesterday by Mr J. P. Da/ies, secretary of the Fishermen’s Federation.
“The whole object of our federation is to get co-operation between the different sections of the industry, and we are working towards that end- in holding a meeting with the wholesalers next month,” said Mr Davies.
“Tying up trawlers and taking extreme measures will really achieve nothing,” he said. “Such actions are not answers to the over-all problems. That is why we are trying to together with the different Sections oFthe industry to get the answers.’*
