DETONATORS DANGEROUS
This is one of the posters being provided for all schools, through Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., to warn children about the danger of detonators. Every year children suffer limb, hand, and eye injuries—sometimes their lives—through playing with these little cylinders. These accidents have ’ caused school committees and education boards to ask the Education Department for some means of warning pupils. Now the department, the chief inspector of explosives (Mr E. L. Seilens), and 1.C.1. are planning a publicity campaign.
At first films were suggested, said Mr W. B. Harris, supervisor of teaching aids; but there were fears that demonstrations of what happened might put ideas into young heads. Supplying dummy detonators was ruled out because of the cost.
Sufficient posters to go into every school classroom are now being distributed. For young children a cartoon has been prepared and there are other posters for post-primary schools and for teachers. School staffs have been asked to issue frequent warnings and the police have offered help with lectures.
