Minglow Sprints Well In Trial At Wingatui

“The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, Sept. 25. Minglow and Pinnace were the most impressive Dunedin Guineas candidates to work at Wingatui this morning. Other horses engaged on the last day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting, to work well, included Blue Count, Ark Royal and Peril, and the two-year-olds, Surhine, Disorder and Subtrist.

Minglow (R. J. Skelton), one of the few horses which worked on the plough, ran a dazzling trial over five furlongs in Imin ssec. She ran the first two furlongs in 24sec. Her stable-mate, Subtrist (B. J. Anderton) assisted her over the last half-mile, but Minglow was going away at the finish.

Ark Royal (R. J. Skelton) appeared to be galloping nicely alongside Peril (G. W. Mein) and Matlock (A. I. Powell) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21sec. the first three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. Ark Royal is due to resume racing after a light let-up since the Grand National meeting. The Riccarton pair. Pinnace (J. Didham) and Blonde Sprite (R. J. Skelton) returned one of the best gallops on the outside of the course proper. Pinnace, which was at a disadvantage in the weights, completed his trial boldly. On the other hand, Blonde Sprite was not at ease. Although the time was good, her effort was far from impressive.

Waterfall (G. W. Mein) and Iroquoi (P. Wilde) ran the first two furlongs in 26 l-ssec, and came home strongly together in Imin 6 2-ssec

Of the two-year-olds engaged in the Juvenile Handicap, the quality filly, Surhine, impressed the most. She did not start in the McLean Stakes, but she has trained on the right way after showing up in parades and trials.

Surhine (R. J. Mackie) was giving Disorder (G. W. Mein) a length and a hnf start when they broke away at the half-mile, but she appeared to be galloping easily when she drew up in line in 53sec, the last three furlongs in the Smart time of 39 3-ssec.

Braganza, favourite for the Guineas, arrived at Wingatui in splendid order. He was given a quiet run over half a mile in 56sec, the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec.
