Slow
I Specially written for "The Press" by BARBARA BAIGENT.] Australian road signs amused me on my 10,lG0-mile trip around Australia. New South Wales didn’t admit to having any towns—at least there were not any signs. Victoria was distantly polite and requested one to ’‘Please Slow Down.” South Australia was adamant. ‘‘Slow Down,” said the signs in three feet letters. Western Australia took it literally. It said “Please Drive Carefully.” Sydney herds its pedestrians into little boxes in the middle of the city streets and marks them “Pedestrian Refuge.” In the busier places they build the pylons up like football goal posts. But the Northern Territory warmed the cockles of my heart. There, a thousand miles from nowhere, I came upon the perfect gem: “Slow, Buster, Slow.”
