Brigadier A. S. Falconer, has been reappointed honorary colonel of the Otago and Southland Regiment until August 31, 1960. He has held the appointment since 1953. Dr. D. W. Beaven, who will he officer-in-charge of the full-time teaching unit at Cashmere Hospital will visit, as many medical teaching units in the United Kingdom and the United States as possible before the opening of the unit. Inspector J. J. Halcrow was presented with a bar to his long service and good conduct medal for 30 years’ service in the police, and Constable A. H. Ellens was presented with a bar to his medal for 38 years’ service, by Superintendent D. R. Sugrue at the quarterly parade held at the Central Police Station yesterday. Inspector Halcrow has served in the police for 32 years. # Mr J. Wyn Irwin was elected an honorary member of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club at its annual meeting last evening. Dr. R. Harman, of Auckland, has been appointed chairman of the New Zealand Council for Technical Education. Dr. Harman is also chairman of the New Zealand Nuclear Research Institute.— (P.A.)
