Fire Station Site
Sir,—l commend D. A. Hennessy’s suggestion that the Baptist Church authorities should call a public meeting to protest against the erection of the new fire station on the beautiful river site. If our city fathers allow the proposed desecration of our river frontage it will be remembered next election day.—Yours etc., P. M. NEWELL. Sptember 22, 1958.
Sir,— Where once we could have silent prayer There’s naught but bustle in the air. Nearby the stately Baptist Church, Now someone’s left them in the lurch, For there the new Fire Stations stand x To mar the scenic Avon’s Strand. And chose a spot so calm and still incongruous thing to The beauty of the river’s banks, To pioneers we owe the thanks; The grandeur of the Avon’s flow; O’erlooked by engines row on row Ready to rush on the alarm, To spoil this spot’s so peaceful charm And when the Fire Board’s siren sounds The nbise engendered breaks all bounds. Where men and women sang God’s praise Quite undisturbed in former days. And once where children walked in peace The Fire Board now has taken lease. Now, what a shame, we don’t foresee How things now planned could better be.— Yours, etc., C.S. September 22, 1958.
