Lawn Tennis TOURNAMENT AT AUCKLAND

Robson And Burns To Meet In Final

The Auckland lawn tennis player, Brian Woolf, whose form after he toured overseas in 1957 was often disappointing, showed promise for this season in the early tournament of the West End Club, Auckland, at the week-end He was beaten only 7-5, 6-4 after a difficult struggle with the leading national player, J. E. Robson, in a semi-final.

Intermittent showers and long rallies extended the match to two hours and Woolf was unusually steady. Woolf is top player in the New Zealand Universities’ team which will visit Australia this season.

The West End tournament usually takes two week-ends, but this season it will go into a third because of rain. Next Saturday. Robson will meet A. S. Burns in the men’s single final, and Robson and Burns will play Woolf and G. Johns in the doubles. The women’s singles final will be contested by Mrs J. Tinnock, formerly Miss Judy Burke, and Miss D. Taylor, and Misses Taylor and R. Dickson, and the juniors Misses J. Glenie and B. Bryant, will play off for the women’s doubles.

To get to the final of the women’s singles, Miss Taylor was fully extended by 16-year-old Miss Patsy Belton, who caused a sensation in the early rounds when she eliminated Miss Ruia Morrison. Miss Taylor beat Miss Belton, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, but the young

player has been one of the most outstanding figures of the tournament.

N.Z. UMPIRES’ OFFICERS

Mr W. D. Rawlings, formerly of Christchurch, but now of Wellington, was re-elected president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Umpires’ Association at the annual meeting in Wellington recently. Other officers were elected as follows: patron, Mr L. T. Donovan; vice-presidents, Messrs A. D. Grey, V. Salek, F. L. C. Scrivener, V. Stace and the presidents of affiliated associations, including Mr A. B. McCallum (Canterbury); managements committee, Messrs J. O’Brien, C. S. Plank, B. S. Johns (Auckland delegates), S. Little (Hutt Valley), and R. Pearson (Wellington); secretarytreasurer, Mr J. E. V. Thompson; honorary auditor, Mr R. W. Steele. Mr J. F. D. Carroll, of Auckland, was elected a life member.

Trophies presented at the opening day of the Fendalton Tennis Club were as follows: Men’s singles: championship, P. F. Maples; handicap, G. Belcher. Women’s singles: championship, Mrs M. Nurse- handicap, Mrs M. Nurse. Men’s doubles: championship, P. F. Maples and F. G. Ullrich; handicap, P. F. Maples and F. G. Ullrich. Women’s doubles: championship, Mrs N. Milner and Mrs D. Barnett; handicap, Mrs L. Buxton and Mrs M. Spencer. Mixed doubles: championship, Miss M. McGillivray and P. F. Maples; handicap, Mrs M. Nurse. and F. G. Ullrich; girls’ novice, Clare Robinson; boys’ novice, John Adams.

The St. Albans Tennis Club’s prize winners for the 1957-58 season were:— Women’s championship singles (McKenzie Cup), Miss N. Behrnes; Miss B. Mollison. runner-up. Men’s: B. Judge. The New Zealand Government’s decision to abolish compulsory military training was a retrograde step, the New South Wales secretary of the Returned Services League (Mr W. Yeo) said today.

“With the world situation the way it is, the move could be a suicidal one,’’ he said. Mr Yeo said the R.S.L. would bitterly oppose any move to do away with conscription in Australia.

Theft From Church Poor Box

(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE. Sept. 23. Lennard Vernon Hughes, aged 19, convicted of stealing 2s 3d from a poor box in a Roman Catholic church, was sentenced by Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., to imprisonment for two days and placed on probation for two years.
