P.A.Y.E. TAX NOT PAID IN
Firm Prosecuted In Lower Hutt
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 23. In a case stated by counsel to involve the first prosecutions of an employer under the P.A.Y.E. legislation. Multiplex Industries, Ltd., of Wingate, pleaded guilty in the Lower Hutt Magistrate’s Court today to three charges of failing to pay to the Inland Revenue Department sums deducted from wages. Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M., imposed fines totalling £l2O. Mr J. D. Murray, prosecuting, said one charge related to failure to pay money deducted for social security charges and the other two charges were the first prosecutions under the P.A.Y.E. legislation. This required that tax deducted be paid not later thap the twentieth of the month following deductions, but, said Mr Murray, the sums in question had not been paid within the specified period. All the company’s payments were not up-to-date, he said.
The Magistrate said it was a case of using public funds for the company’s own financial accommodation and could not be treated lighJy as there would be a temptation for other employers to do the same.
