PARLIAMENT’S DIARY

A slow progression through the Order Paper yesterday saw eight bills given their second reading before midnight. Though urgency was taken, proceedings were not speeded up greatly. Twentyone bills remain, and three more were added when the House resumed yesterday afternoon.

After six questions were asked, the House went into Committee to consider the introduction of the Child Welfare Amendment Bill, the Employees’ Indemnity Bill, and the Construction Bill. These were all introduced and given their first reading.

The House then accorded second readings to the Motor Spirits Distribution Amendment Bill, the Finance Bill, the Distillation Amendment Bill, the Simultaneous Deaths Bill, the Judicature Amendment Bill, the Gas Industry Bill, the Maori Purposes Bill, and the New Zealand Society of Accountants Bill. The last

of these bills was passed • through the second reading stage by 11.15 p.m., after which the House settled down to what seemed likely to be a long debate on the second reading of the Dairy Products Marketing Commission Amendment Bill.
