Surhine’s Smart Sprint In Wingatui Work
“The Press” Special Service
DUNEDIN, September 23.
The smart Resurgent filly, Surhine, was the most impressive two-year-old which galloped at Wingatui this morning. Others
which showed up in their work were the veteran, Jamell, Ark Royal and the novice candidate, Cassino. A cold wind made conditions unpleasant. The tracks were in first-class order. Surhine (R. J. Mackie) proved a length too good for the Riccarton candidate, Disorder (G. W. Mein) in a smart dash over three furlongs on the outside of the course proper in 38 3-ssec. Neither of these youngsters started in the McLean Stakes, but both are engaged in the Juvenile Handicap on Saturday. A Royal Commission colt from Disturbance, Disorder is trained by A. Cutts and R. Preece for Mr J. D. Douglas-Clifford. He has missed some work through a leg infection. Foxplay (P. Wilde) finished on to have a length to spare from Hunted (G. W. Mein) over the same ground in 40 2-ssec. Foxplay impressively won the Trial Handicap on Saturday and will start in the hack sprint this week. Forced Pace Landqn (R. J. Mackie) forced the pace over six furlongs but his stablemate, Jamell (B. Blair) passed him in the run home to complete the distance in Imin 19 3-ssec, the first three furlongs in 39sec. Jamell came home well for eighth place in the sprint on Saturday after losing ground at the start.
Cassino (R. J. Mackie) ran the opening furlong in 12sec and ran on strongly to beat Wick Light (E. E. O’Brien) by three lengths at the end of the half-mile in 52sec. Cassino was a disappointing runner in the Trial Handicap on Saturday. On the plough, Ark Royal (R. J. Skelton) ran a good even trial over six furlongs in Imin 20sec. the first three furlongs in 39 2-5 sec. The Marco Polo horse looks
in trim for his race in the Grandstand Handicap on Saturday, in which he is top weight with 9-9. He will be ridden by R. J. Skelton.
Blonde Sprite (R. J. Skelton) and Petty Officer (G. E. Lowry) were given an easy run in Imin 24 l-ssec, the first three furlongs in 41 4-ssec.
Minglow (H. T. Anderton) ran the first two furlongs in 24 l-ssec and completed five furlongs in 1 min ssec. The Globe of Light filly will be ridden by B. J. Anderton in the Dunediri* Guineas on Saturday.' All Fair (A. I. Powell) and Black Star (R. J. Skelton) ran the first furlong in 13sec and both were galloping very easily at the end of half a mile in 53sec. Cross Grain (R. J. Skelton) ran wide at the turn, allowing his stablemate, Central King (E. O’Brien), to have a length and a half to spare at the post in 53 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Surapt (B. Blair) was given a quiet half-mile in 55sec, the last three furlongs in 42sec. Gem Lake (E. E. O’Brien) on to be a length clear of Lingering (R. J. Skelton) at the end of three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Tripped (G. E. Lowry) and Bright Amber (E. E. O’Brien) completed their work by sprinting home in 41 2-ssec.
