HOLD IN MEAT SHIP
Watersiders Complain
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND,. Sept. 21. An official of the Auckland Cargo Workers’ Union confirmed that a waterside gang had complained to a stevedore this week about a dirty hold in the Port Jackson, which is loading meat for Britain. The watersiders said that some of the sides of stockinet-wrapped pork stowed in the hold had torn coverings and more sides with ripped packing had to be recovered on the wharf. The official spid that chips of sawdust had settled on the meat while it was being loaded. The stevedore had said that the hold had passed inspection and nothing could be done about it. An officer in the Port Jackson said that before food cargoes were loaded in a ship the holds were inspected by a Lloyd’s surveyor. The surveyor and a meat inspector had found nothing wrong with the ship’s holds, the officer said.
When asked to comment, the president of the Auckland Cargo Workers’ Union (Mr E. Isbey) said the matter would be discussed at the next union meeting.
