ANTARCTIC CRUISE
Scheme 44 A Little Premature”
The suggestion made by RearAdmiral G. J. Dufek, United States Antarctic expedition commander, that New Zealand should send a tourist ship on a cruise to Antarctica was “a little premature,” said Mr R. ,W. Marshall, general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department, in Christchurch yesterday. ‘‘My personal view is that it is something for the future,” Mr Marshall added. The economic question must be considered. “It would mean taking one of the ships off the New Zea-land-Australia run and it would be diverted at the peak of the tourist season.”
The inter-island steamer, Maori, is not suitable as it is not fitted for such a voyage—it does not have the dining-room space, he said.
Asked if the department will give consideration to Admiral Dufek’s suggestion, Mr Marshall said: “My personal opinion is that our main job is to bring tourists to New Zealand not to send them out.”
